MARVIN'S GARDEN CLUB
Roses

Rosa

What can you say about roses? With their beauty and variety, there is a rose to compliment any garden as well as any gardener. Roses take a lot of care and attention, but the rewards they bring are unquestionably worth the effort.

Did You Know:

  • There are more than 100 different species of rose.

  • Roses go way back. Rose fossils have been discovered that date as far back as 35 million years.

  • The rose is one of only three flowers named in the bible, the other two being lilies and camphire (better known as henna).

  • The oldest known rose bush is more than 1000 years old and grows on a wall of the cathedral of Hildesheim in Germany.

  • The world’s largest, private rose garden in Cavriglia, Italy, is home to over 7,500 different varieties of roses. Marvin’s is home to 15 different color varieties. That’s still a lot.

Roses grow best when placed in an area that gets ample sunlight for at least six hours a day. Be sure to plant them in fertile, well-draining soil.

Add a 2-3-inch layer of coarse, organic mulch around your roses. Coarse mulch helps reduce foliage disease because it reduces the amount of water splashing onto leaves.

Water roses deeply but infrequently, applying directly to the soil using soaker hoses.

Check the soil with your finger, water often enough to create consistently moist soil.

Check your roses frequently for insects or disease.

Prune your roses regularly.
